Supplement effects of low- and high-cyanide cassava peels on the performance, nutrient digestibility, and serum metabolites of growing pigs

Abstract


30 growing pigs were randomly offered diets containing 0, 203, or 419 mg  HCN/kg in order to investigate the effects of low and high cyanide concentrations in cassava peels on the performance, nutrient digestibility, serum protein (total),  albumin, urea, glutamic pyruvate transaminase, and glutamic oxaloacetate transaminase. The weight gain, feed intake, feed utilization, and protein efficiency  ratio were not significantly affected (P<0.05) by the dietary cyanide level, altough these parameters were lower in animals consuming the high-cyanide diet. While  the serum total protein and albumin were not significantly different (P<0.05) between animals on the low- and high-cyanide diets, the serum urea was significantly (P) increased with increasing dietary cyanide level. Serum glutamic pynivate transaminase (SGPT) and serum glutamic oxaloacetate transaminase (SGOT) did not react significantly (P>0.05) to increased dietary cyanide levels.
