Use of the countries own rock phosphate in agriculture of Burkina Faso

Abstract

Burkina Faso is a country with unfavourable climatic conditions for agriculture. This restricts the possibility of increasing food production. Most of Burkina Faso soils are deficient of phosphorus, being the minimum factor No. 1. But fortunately it is controllable by applying phosphate fertilizers. Since Burkina Faso is in the possession of natural deposits of rock phosphate in the Kodjari area, trials were carried out, to find whether this rock phosphate could be used as fertilizer in agricu1ture.Thi.s paper gives details of these trials. It was found that the Kodjari-rock phosphates give satisfactory to good results when applied to the most important food crops under the conditions of Burkina Faso. In this trials rock phosphate was used in three different forms: untreated, mixed with sulfur and treated with sulphuric acid.

Zur Anwendung des landeseigenen Rohphosphates in der Landwirtschaft Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso ist ein Land, wo die Steigerung der landwirtschaftlichen Produktion durch ungünstige klimatische Verhältnisse stark gehemmt ist. In Burkina Faso herrscht ein chronischer Phosphormangel in den Böden, der für die landwirtschaftliche Produktion ein limitierender, aber kontrollierbarer Faktor ist. Allerdings kann dieser Phosphormangel durch eine Anwendung von Rohphosphat überwunden werden. Das Kodjari-Rohphosphat und sein Aufschlußprodukte haben in den Böden Burkina Fasos eine erhebliche Steigerung der Erträge der lokalen Nahrungskulturen bewirkt. Man kann hoffen, da8 durch den Abbau des landeseigenen Phosphats, die Sicherung der Nahrungsmittelproduktion und die Einsparung von wertvollen Devisen erreicht werden.
