Green Gold: Small-holders vanilla-production in Bali (Indonesia)

Abstract

Vanilla fits on the natural conditions as well as on the cultivationsystems in Bali. A great advantage is that vanilla is grown together with other cash crops like coconut trees and coffee. So other agricultural areas are not needed. The high price of vanilla could raise immensely the income of the farmers. This part of the article is followed by the description of the development of vanilla-cultivation and the vanilla-development-programme. Great problems still exist with regard to processing and marketing vanilla. In this respect cooperatives could play an important Part in future time.

Zusammenfassung: Die Vanille paßt sich den natürlichen Bedingungen in Bali in idealer Weise an. Der große Vorteil des Vanilleanbaus besteht darin, daß Vanille zusammen mit anderen Handelsgewächsen wie Kokospalmen und Kaffee angepflanzt wird. Somit werden keine zusätzlichen landwirtschaftlichen Nutzflächen benötigt und die Nahrungsmittelproduktion wird nicht eingeschränkt. Der hohe Wert der Vanille kann das Betriebseinkommen außerordentlich steigern. Im vorliegenden Beitrag werden ferner die Entwicklung des Vanilleanbaus und das Vanille-Entwicklungsprogramm behandelt. Große Probleme bestehen noch bei der Aufarbeitung und der Vermarktung der Vanille. Auf diesem Gebiet könnten Genossenschaften künftig eine wichtige Rolle spielen.
