Abstract

Detailed controlled tests with an animal driven power transmission (capstan) / or  post harvest machinery demonstrate the effect of the length of the drive beam (diameter of Walking circle) on animal wellfare, walking speed, power output and  overall efficiency.  Inspite of the low power range of less than 200 Watt for a donkey, up to 10% of efficiency can be gained by optimizing the length of the beam.
