Feeding of Milk buffaloes in Pakistan and proposed improvements

Abstract

The feeding situation of Nili-Ravi-buffalo is described in this report using the results of a field study. This study, which has been undertaken in 30 farms of the Punjab  province in Pakistan, was performed continuosly over a year with 14-days intervals. The results have shown that due to the irregular supply of basic feed and due to the  current extremely high straw feeding, no balanced feeding is done in this area. Consequently there is considerable fluctuation in the milk production over the year. With the introduction of an improved fodder cropping pattern, green fodder can be produced  continuously. This, together with the use of feed value tables which contain the digestibility of the feed components in addition to the crude nutrients, it is possible to compose rations which supply the requirements of the animals adequately. Combined  with an intensive extention service, these recommendations could produce better results.
