Potentials of Sustainable Agricultural Aystems in Tropical Hill regions of Central America

Jürgen Pohlan, Jörg Borgman, Helmut Eiszner

Abstract

Approaches to sustainable agricultural systems exist in all three analysed regions. The  summarised potentials can not be considered to reflect the actual state of development. Problems with land property rights and capital out-flow from the system inhibit the  establishment of agricultural systems with a high diversity in Chiapas. In the mountains  of the Sierra Maestra exists the contradiction between the obligated milk and meat production and the ecological approach of the biosphere national park Plan Turquino. The restitution of sustainable agricultural systems in the Meseta de los Pueblos, Nicaragua. was only possible with extemal economic aid.
