William Gamboa, Dirk Philipp, Jürgen Pohlan

Abstract

The Valley of Ujarrás is one of the most important regions of chayote cultivation in the  world. In a field study 30 farmers’ socio-economic status, cultivation conditions and  cultivation methods were analysed between August to December 1995. The sustainable  land use and cultivation of chayote was recommended to all farmers interviewed. The  principle crop chayote is cultivated today in mixed cropping with other vegetables  (tomato, sweet pepper, green beans, cabbage and cucumber).
