Acute intoxication symptoms of sheep caused by the aminoacid mimosine

Abstract

Young sheep, introduced to Leucaena leaf meal only for one week, show acute intoxication symptoms when 800 mg mimosine per kg body weight are administered orally at the 8th day. They must be attended medicamential for surviving. At the 9th and 10th day after mimosine administration hairloss begins by all the animals and continues till the sheep are completely naked. The intoxication effects are reversible and can be seen early.

Akute Vergiftungserscheinungen bei Schafen verursacht durch die Aminosäure Mimosin

Junge Schafe, die nur eine Woche mit Leucaena-Grünmehl vorgefüttert werden, zeigen akute Vergiftungserscheinungen wenn sie am 8. Tag 800 mg Mimosin pro kg Körpergewicht oral verabreicht bekommen. Sie müssen medikamentös behandelt werden um zu überleben. Am 9. und 10. Tag nach Mimosinverabreichung beginnt bei den Tieren Haarausfall, der sich soweit fortsetzt, bis sie gänzlich nackt sind. Die Vergiftungserscheinungen sind reversibel und gut erkennbar.
