Abstract

Forage trees and shrubs play an important and multiple roles in the balance of many range ecosystems exploited by higher animals and people. First of all, trees and shrubs provide fodder, which is of great importance during periods of nutritional stress in the dry seasons when the nutritional value of dormant grasses and forbs is low. Other benefits of ligneous plants for animal husbandry are the provision of shade and acting as a microclimate for plants, animals and soil.

Zusammenfassung: Bäume und Sträucher sind wichtige Bestandteile vieler Naturweiden. Ob natürlich vorhanden oder künstlich etabliert können sie eine entscheidende Verbesserung der Tierproduktion, besonders in tropischen Trockengebieten, bewirken.
Neben der Fähigkeit in Trockenzeiten, wenn der Grast/Krautbestand sehr arm an Nährstoffen ist, Futter bereitzustellen, wirken sich einige Büsche und Bäume auffallend positiv auf Quantität und Qualität des Unterwuchses aus.
Die Bereitstellung von Schutz vor extremen Temperaturen und starken Winden trägt in nicht geringem Maße zur Verbesserung der Tierproduktion bei.
